As the excitement builds for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, there is also some heartbreaking news coming out of the famed racetrack. Two horses tragically lost their lives following races on Tuesday, May 2nd.

Take Charge Briana, a 3-year-old filly, fell during Race 5 and brought down jockey, Luis Saez, with her. While Saez was reported OK, the filly had to be euthanized on the track.

In Race 8, 5-year-old gelding Chasing Artie collapsed and died following the race.

Churchill Downs and other racetracks have implemented various measures to improve horse safety over the years, such as stricter regulations on drug use and more thorough veterinary inspections.

The two deaths come days after Derby contender Wild On Ice was euthanized in Lexington on April 27th following a morning workout.
