“Basket Case” is one of Green Day’s most enduring hits – but it was almost a very, very different song than the one we all know.

Billie Joe Armstrong recently talked about the song’s origins on the podcast Song Exploder – revealing that he started out writing “this sort of grand song about a love story”.

He even brought his original 4-track demo of the song, which tells the story of a couple named ‘Houston’ and ‘Swanky’.

Armstrong eventually decided that “the lyrics were just embarrassingly bad” and set the song aside for a while, until reworking it for the band’s breakout album Dookie.

He calls it “the best decision I’d ever made, probably, as a songwriter.”

Would ‘Basket Case’ have been a hit if it was a love song?
