Billy Corgan Lays Out Strategy To “Defeat Pop Stars”

Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has conceded that pop stars have “weaponized the singular moment” – and the only way for rock musicians to combat them is to do the exact opposite.

Contradicting recent comments made by Fozzy’s Chris Jericho, Corgan says releasing singles and focusing on individual songs instead of overall albums should be left to pop stars, adding that rockers should stick to doing what they do best.

“The pop stars have weaponized the singular moment,” he says. “What we couldn’t have anticipated two decades ago was the way they would weaponize the pop moment with social media and perfume companies and Super Bowl appearances. We have to find a different way to engage our audience and say, ‘That’s fine, but we’re different over here.’”

Smashing Pumpkins’ latest album, Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Parts, is available now.

Which rock band gets closer to crossing the pop line than anyone else?
