Derek Chauvin to be Sentenced Friday; Faces 30 Years in Prison

Two months after a jury found him guilty of second- and third-degree murder in the death of George Floyd, Derek Chauvin is set to be sentenced for the crime.

The former Minneapolis cop is due in court Friday, when a judge is expected to hand down a sentence that could land Chauvin in prison for up to 30 years, prosecutors say. Chauvin, who has yet to comment on the May 2020 incident, is expected to speak before he learns of his fate.

Chauvin is accused of killing Floyd by kneeling on the handcuffed man’s neck, ignoring his repeated pleas that he couldn’t breathe. The incident sparked nationwide protests and calls to defund local police departments.

Do you think Chauvin will get the full 30 years? What will happen if he’s let off with a slap on the wrist?
