Horror movie Insidious: The Red Door was the surprise winner at the box office over the weekend.

The movie dethroned Indiana Jones for the #1 spot with $32.6 million in its opening weekend – all the more impressive considering the movie cost just $16 million to make.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny finished second with $26.5 million in its second week.

Sound of Freedom ($17 million), Elemental ($9.6 million), and Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse ($8 million) rounded out the top five.

Why is Insidious such a big hit while big-name franchises like Indiana Jones, Transformers, and Fast & Furious have mostly flopped?
