Just days after more than 100 residents marched on the state capitol to protest coronavirus restrictions, Kentucky has reported its biggest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began.

Governor Andy Beshear says at least 273 new cases were confirmed between Sunday and Monday, bringing Kentucky’s total to 2,960. “We are still in the midst of this fight against a deadly and highly contagious virus,” Beshear says. “Let’s make sure, as much as we’re looking at those benchmarks and we’re looking at the future, that we are acting in the present and we are doing the things that it takes to protect one another.”

The news comes after two demonstrations were held to protest Beshear’s stay-at-home order. The first occurred last Wednesday, when more than 100 protesters picketed the the Capitol building, chanting, “Open up Kentucky!” Attempting to repeat the demonstration on Friday, residents found access to the Capitol was blocked by barricades — so they got back into their cars and drove around the building in protest.
