Attorney General Merrick Garland recently announced that the Justice Department has found reasonable cause to believe the Louisville Metro Police Department and the city’s government violated citizens’ rights.

The announcement follows an investigation prompted by the 2020 shooting death of Breonna Taylor. In response, the city and LMPD have agreed to a consent decree.

Garland also identified numerous areas of concern in the police department, including excessive use of force, use of invalid warrants, failure to knock and announce, discrimination, and inadequate response to domestic violence and sexual assault calls.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg and the new police chief responded to the report, vowing to make improvements and heal the wounds in the community.
