Ms. Pac-Man is one of the most iconic characters in video game history – but she’s got a new look and a new identity, thanks to a dispute over the rights to her name.

The recent Arcade Archives re-release of the 1984 platformer Pac-Land has swapped out Ms. Pac-Man – and her signature red bow and boots – for ‘Pac-Mom’, who wears a pink hat and heels.

Why make the change?  Because despite owning the Pac-Man franchise, Bandai Namco doesn’t actually hold the rights to the Ms. Pac-Man character – so they made the switch to avoid having to pay royalties.

What’s your all-time favorite Pac-Man game?
