‘Better Man’ is one of Pearl Jam’s most beloved songs – but the band originally didn’t want it to be a hit.

Producer Brendan O’Brien told YouTuber Rick Beato the first time he heard the song, he told the band “That sounds great. That’s a hit. That’s awesome… And everybody just kind of goes, ‘Ugh.’”

From there, it was an “uphill battle” to get them to record the song, and Pearl Jam never officially released it as a single – which didn’t stop it from reaching #1 on the Billboard Rock chart.

O’Brien wasn’t surprised: “It was gonna get done because the song was that good. It was going to raise itself up at some point.”

Why were so many ’90s bands afraid of ‘selling out’ if they had a hit song?
