The USWNT’s early exit from the Women’s World Cup brought an abrupt end to the career of Megan Rapinoe.

The 38-year-old star announced ahead of the tournament that she was retiring this year.

Rapinoe entered Sunday’s match vs. Sweden in the 99th minute, but missed a key kick during the penalty shootout.

Afterwards, Rapinoe told reporters “It’s been an honor”.

Rapinoe won World Cups in 2015 and 2019, and was awarded both the Golden Ball and Golden Boot in the 2019 World Cup.  She also led the USWNT’s years-long campaign to earn equal pay compared to the U.S. men’s team.

Will Rapinoe be remembered more for her on-field or off-field accomplishments?  Where does she rank all-time among the great women’s soccer players?
