A rare stomach condition called “auto-brewery syndrome” can get a person drunk from alcohol brewed in their own stomach.

Recently, a 46-year-old man was diagnosed with the condition after he was arrested for drunk driving, despite the fact that he hadn’t had any alcohol.

Researchers say fungi in a patient’s digestive system turns carbohydrates into alcohol, which can leave them intoxicated. It’s very rare but more commonly found in people with diabetes, Crohn’s disease, or obesity.
