The Food and Drug Administration is preparing to impose restrictions that will lead to the ban of menthol cigarettes in the United States, sources tell NBC News.
The move is expected to come before a court-ordered Thursday deadline to respond to a petition that urges the agency to make menthol smokes illegal. The court order is the result of a lawsuit filed last year by the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council.
More than 85 percent of Black smokers use menthol cigarettes, research indicates.
