Slash Reveals The Origin Of His Top Hat

While lead singer Axl Rose may sport a somewhat unique look, the member of Guns N’ Roses who provides the band with its most defining characteristic is Slash.

With his curly black locks and signature top hat, he’s arguably the most recognizable guitarist in rock music. But how did he acquire his distinctive look? The answer might not be as exciting as you hope.

“I went into this in store on Melrose in Los Angeles and saw a top hat,” Slash recalls. “And I was like, ‘Oh that looks cool.’ And we had a show that night, so I was definitely looking for something to wear for the show that evening.” However, he didn’t have enough money to pay for the hat, Slash reveals. So he stole it. He then decorated it with adornments he cut from a concho belt – which he also stole from a different store, he says.

While the look of Slash’s hat hasn’t changed over the years, the hat fans see perched upon his melon these days is not the same hat he started out with. Ironically, that hat was stolen from him, he says. “Not long after, I got drunk at the Cathouse and someone stole it from me,” Slash says. “And then I had to pay for the next one.”

What other rockers could you identify even if you couldn’t see his or her face?
