Spotify Wants To Make Song Recommendations Based On Users’ Speech, Emotions

Do you enjoy listening to Spotify? Now the streaming platform wants to listen to you – literally.

The company has applied for a patent for technology that would monitor users’ speech for “emotional state, gender, age, or accent” – and make song recommendations based on what it hears.

The technology could even listen for background noise to determine the environment the listener is in – like in the car or at a party.

It’s not clear when Spotify plans to roll out this technology – or if it even exists at this point. The company says it files patents for “hundreds of inventions”, many of which never see the light of day.
