The Beastie Boys Are About To Have A Street Named After Them

The Gothamist reports that cultural advocate LeRoy McCarthy is finally making headway in his 9-year push to rename Ludlow Street and Rivington Street as “Beastie Boys Square.”

McCarthy knew he’d realize his dream after submitting thousands of signatures to Manhattan’s Community Board 3 but he didn’t.

“Yeah, they rejected it,” McCarthy said about the initial proposal. “They pretty much thought that it was not necessary. They placed undemocratic obstacles, although the application met the requirements of the rule. I do not know what their reasons were.”

Community board rules said he couldn’t apply for five years.

Now, nine years later the vote is expected to be called up within the next few weeks and seems like it’s going to pass.

Do you think the Beastie Boys deserve their own street?
