Florida Just 1 Step Away From Banning Social Media For Minors
A bill that seeks to ban all underage Florida residents from using social media has cleared its second of three hurdles.
House Bill-1 was approved by the Florida Senate on Thursday in a 23-14 vote. It next heads to Governor Ron DeSantis’ desk for his approval.
The legislation, which seeks to make social media illegal for all Florida residents who are 16 years old and younger, has been at the center of controversy among the state’s lawmakers. “This may not be a perfect bill, but it’s the beginning of a conversation where we say we’re going to find a way to protect the most vulnerable people in our society,” says Senator Doug Broxson, who supports the bill. However, Senator Sherwin Jones adds, “I agree that social media has become a harm to not just children, but also to adults. But it is not the legislation’s job to parent the parents how to parent.”
