No, it’s not a joke; today marks the 20th anniversary of Google’s email platform, Gmail.

Gmail was announced to the public on April 1st, 2004, promising an unprecedented 1 gigabyte of free storage – nearly 500 times the amount offered by other free email services.

It was so revolutionary that many people assumed it was an April Fools’ joke.

At the time, invites to open a Gmail account were a hot commodity – selling for hundreds of dollars on eBay.

Today, Gmail boasts more than 1.8 billion active accounts and offers 15 gigs of free storage.

What was your first email provider?  Do you still use it?
