Record Number Of Americans Are Living Alone

A record number of Americans are living alone, according to the latest U.S. Census data.

An estimated 29 percent of U.S. households consisted of just one person – known as ‘solitaries’ – in 2022.

That’s an unprecedented number – up from 18 percent in 1970, and just 8 percent in 1940.

Researchers cite a number of factors in the shift – including an aging populace, lower birthrates, a tendency to get married later.

A larger share of women joining the workforce is also listed as a factor.
