T-shirts? Ice cream? Retailers Are Cashing In On Juneteenth

Retailers have been quick to commemorate Juneteenth with mountains of merchandise from ice cream to t-shirts.

But, many are getting backlash on social media.

Critics say the merch undermines the day, designated as a federal holiday last year to honor the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.

ABC News did a search for Juneteenth items among online sellers like Amazon and found everything from toothpicks to party plates and balloons.

Walmart apologized last month for a Juneteenth ice cream flavor and the Indianapolis Children’s Museum recently pulled a Juneteenth watermelon salad from its menu.

Some experts say if retailers plan to recognize the day, they should either sell merchandise from Black-owned businesses or invest in campaigns that would help Black communities instead.
