The folks at Establish the Run used analytics to identify the best squares to pick, assuming $1 squares and a $25 payout each quarter.

The biggest winner?  0-0, with an expected value of $7.12.  That’s followed by 0-7 and 7-0, with an expected value of $6.12.

The next-best choices are the ones you’d expect: 0-3, 7-7, 7-3, etc.

An underrated number is 4 – which offers decent payouts for combinations like 4-7, 4-0, 4-3, and 4-4.

The best numbers to avoid?  5, 2, 9, and 8 all have very low payout averages.
