The debut album from Foo Fighters featured a toy ray gun on the cover. So what’s the story behind this iconic image?

The toy is a Buck Rogers XZ-38 Disintegrator Pistol, dating back to the 1940’s.

The image ties into the band name itself – ‘foo fighters’ was a name given to glowing fireballs reported by WWII pilots, which some believed came from UFOs.

The photo was taken by Jennifer Youngblood, Dave Grohl’s wife at the time.

Believe it or not, the cover generated some controversy – some didn’t like the image of a gun on the cover, considering Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain had used a gun to take his own life three years earlier.
