Tool Frontman Says Drag Outfit Had ‘Nothing To Do With Florida’

When Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan performed at Florida’s Welcome to Rockville festival Sunday wearing a blonde wig, lipstick and fake breasts, many fans praised him for openly protesting Governor Ron DeSantis’ new transgender laws. But now Keenan says he was doing nothing of the sort.

“I’m not a political fella — had nothing to do with Florida,” Keenan says. “I’ve been cross-dressing since long before these clickbait-junkie dupes were out of diapers. It’s pretty crazy, the technology and the prosthetics nowadays, how they’ve come along, and I just was considering bringing the look back.”

Among Florida’s new anti-transgender laws is one that makes it a crime to allow children access to drag shows; and since Sunday’s event was open to all ages, Keenan technically broke the law. But the singer says he isn’t worried. “Nobody’s enforcing it,” Keenan says. “They just do that and they throw it out there to shore up their base for an election year.”

Are DeSantis’ anti-transgender laws allowing people of that community to be discriminated against?
