While dating a romantic chatbot might have several advantages over maintaining a relationship with another human, apparently trust isn’t one of them.

The non-profit Mozilla Foundation has analyzed the 11 most popular romantic chatbot apps – and it’s found that every single one of them sells user data and shares it with targeted advertisers, the foundation revealed on Wednesday.

The report is the latest strike against AI romance apps, which have come under fire for alienating users from real life and helping to build unrealistic relationship expectations. In 2021, Replika came under fire after a 19-year-old British man was arrested for planning to kill Queen Elizabeth II – an act that his AI girlfriend encouraged him to carry out.
