Richard Patrick Says Filter’s Latest Song Was Inspired By Fear

While love and pain are two of the biggest inspirations behind hit songs, Richard Patrick says a different kind of emotion prompted him to write Filter’s newest song, “Be Careful What You Wish For.”

The singer says he based the song on a “scary” situation he recently experienced. “It’s about a fan that has gone way too far and has stalked some of my friends and has said some really bad things about them,” Patrick says. “And they’re all figments of his imagination. I tried to explain this to him very, very gently, just, like, ‘Hey, bro, that did not happen.’ He was saying things that were just insane. And I mean that in the nicest way possible. He was saying things that were just delusional, and it’s scary.”

“Be Careful What You Wish For” is featured on Filter’s latest album, The Algorithm.
